Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics of Time-dependent Langevin Systems: Energy Balance Relation and the Extended Form of the Second Law
نویسنده
چکیده
A general nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory is developed for timedependent Langevin dynamics, starting from the common definition of nonequilibrium Gibbs entropy. It is shown that the notations appearing in the First and the Second Law of thermodynamics could be consistently applied to transient nonequilibrium processes. We find out a general equality representing the energy balance relation for the system, and further an explicit mathematical interpretation for the extended form of the Second Law is proposed, which only comes into existence in the time-dependent case. More applications to several classic thermodynamic processes are finally included. Many different kinds of approach have been put forward in the last several decades [16], but in contrast to equilibrium systems, with their elegant theoretical framework, the understanding of nonequilibrium steady-state systems is still ∗Mathematical Department and Center for Computational Systems Biology, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, P.R. Fluctuations of the total entropy production in stochastic systems
Fluctuations of the excess heat in an out of equilibrium steady state are experimentally investigated in two stochastic systems : an electric circuit with an imposed mean current and a harmonic oscillator driven out of equilibrium by a periodic torque. In these two linear systems, we study excess heat that represents the difference between the dissipated heat out of equilibrium and the dissipat...
متن کاملMesoscopic kinetic basis of macroscopic chemical thermodynamics: A mathematical theory.
Gibbs' macroscopic chemical thermodynamics is one of the most important theories in chemistry. Generalizing it to mesoscaled nonequilibrium systems is essential to biophysics. The nonequilibrium stochastic thermodynamics of chemical reaction kinetics suggested a free energy balance equation dF^{(meso)}/dt=E_{in}-e_{p} in which the free energy input rate E_{in} and dissipation rate e_{p} are bot...
متن کاملSteady-state thermodynamics of Langevin systems.
We study Langevin dynamics describing nonequilibirum steady states. Employing the phenomenological framework of steady-state thermodynamics constructed by Oono and Paniconi [Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl. 130, 29 (1998)], we find that the extended form of the second law which they proposed holds for transitions between steady states and that the Shannon entropy difference is related to the excess he...
متن کاملEnergy Dissipation and Fluctuation-Response in Driven Quantum Langevin Dynamics
Energy dissipation in a nonequilibrium steady state is studied in driven quantum Langevin systems. We study energy dissipation flow to thermal environment, and obtain a general formula for the average rate of energy dissipation using an autocorrelation function for the system variable. This leads to a general expression of the equality that connects the violation of the fluctuation-response rel...
متن کاملEnergy dissipation and violation of the fluctuation-response relation in nonequilibrium Langevin systems.
The fluctuation-response relation is a fundamental relation that is applicable to systems near equilibrium. On the other hand, when a system is driven far from equilibrium, this relation is violated in general because the detailed-balance condition is not satisfied in nonequilibrium systems. Even in this case, it has been found that for a class of Langevin equations, there exists an equality be...
